There are a lot of promises made out there by ERP, enterprise resource planning, salespeople that their ERP system is simple to use and can be implemented quickly and easily. The fact is that a full scale enterprise system is 100 fold more complicated to implement and deploy than standard off the shelf software you simply load onto your PC. Infact, the implementation process and costs of an ERP system for most companies is the key factor in determining whether or not the return on investment, or ROI, for the capital dedicated to the new enterprise system initiative was a success.

Before the ERP selection process gets started, it’s critical to make sure that the push for a new enterprise implementation has the full support and genuine enthusiasm from the top managers of the organization. The key to a successful ERP implementation rests on the role the system is targeted to have on the company’s short term and long term strategy. The ERP system selected must be embedded in the company’s strategy and not just an after-thought or add-on to the company strategic plan when its already completed.

Another important factor for a successful enterprise implementation is choosing the right ERP software for your company and knowing what the system can do from top to bottom. Unfortunately, companies end up purchasing enterprise solutions that meet their key requirements, but don’t go down one layer deeper to learn all that the ERP solution has to offer. A good percentage of companies who implement new enterprise systems don’t maximize the full benefit of the solution even after a successful implementation foregoing additional optimization that could bring in more profits and subsequently a higher ROI on the enterprise capital investment.

Lastly, when implementing your ERP system, after doing considerable due diligence to find the right solution for your company, roll out the implementation in a phased approach. Focus on the priority areas first, complete them and then move down the list until the implementation is complete. The saying, “biting off more than you can chew” definitely applies to enterprise wide system implementations. Key learnings can occur with every phase that can benefit the following phases of the implementation. By taking the implementation in smaller chunks, the full functionality of that specific module can be thoroughly digested thus yielding better deployment and ultimate usage of the system.
